After 7 cold days in Chile I recommend that you own an algorithm

Posted by oskar on June 26, 2007 at 19:13

I thought about blogging a little bit about how cold Chile has been these last few days but after having spent 7 sentences complaining I was just tired of hearing my self complain. I shouldn’t complain. I am a very happy man! I have just spent a week in my new role as self-employed in South America. Life has ups and downs and this sure is an up. I think many would consider what I am doing to be a sacrifice, and I do too like 3 minutes in total every day. But those other (24*60)-3 minutes I like it. In fact, I love it. Not loving IT, though. We have some issues with networks, with some technicalities in the system and with this new Windows Vista that I was foolish enough to purchase the other day. It’s like XP in slow-motion, which I guess is a nice feature if you really love XP, otherwise it could be considered quite annoying (read = *** annoying).

Those 3 minutes of mental self-spanking are so far due to waking up on the living-room floor where I… wouldn’t say stay… where I survive during nights… waking up whenever a toe or a similar extremity finds itself outside of the ridiculously thick layer of blankets I hide under. Outside of that, but inside the apartment, you could freeze do death. I would say some 2 degrees tops, that probably is an exaggeration but a justified such... There I went about the weather anyway… sorry!

So what’s new on the Needish-frontiers. For the initiated party it might be interesting knowing that we are working on some exciting algorithms… can an algorithm be exciting? Definitely! Especially when you own a part of it! Those algorithms are not really new to the concept but they were planned for a future version. A Skype-chat with a very nice man – an American lawyer – yesterday evening had us understand that for quite simple reasons those algorithms should be moved from version 2 to version 1. Thank you nice American lawyer, if you read this!

Moving something from version 2 to version 1 means changes in priorities and we are now thinking of what to remove from version 1. I will throw some options out there and let readers vote.

Needish will, in version 1, remove the following feature from its web-service:

1) Help-texts explaining how to use the system

2) A background image of the management team singing Shakira

3) Links to go from one part of the system to another

It’s a tough one! Believe me, I know.

The Shakira-picture will be taken next week and no one knows about it yet. That’s one of the CEO-perks. I can tell people to either make complete fools of them selves on stage or work all Sundays in August… without office-heating!

So, karaoke Kick-off next week. Ale, can you make necessary arrangements?

During kick-off we will also discuss the Gantt-scheme in the tactical plan! How much fun!

Chau / Oskar

Gan Chile?

Posted by oskar on June 19, 2007 at 17:21

I am only minutes away from trusting my life in the hands of Lan Chile, as many times before. Lan, to me even though I am not a great "computin", means Local Area Network. Considering how long this flight is I think Gan Chile, Global Area Network would be a better name. Or Global Air Network. This blogpost, however, has nothing to do with Lan Chile and everything to do with making potential investors understand that I can play with words. I am not saying it

Thanks Agresso

Posted by oskar on June 18, 2007 at 10:13
After what seems like ages, I am finally visiting the Stockholm office at Agresso for the very last time. I would like to take this opportunity to tell the "world" that Agresso Sweden is a fantastic place to work for. They give you liberty to develop new knowledge, try your own wings and they manage you by knowledge (whenever you have questions). As a student coming from University I have had the opportunity to learn from and laugh with great colleagues of all ages. Thanks to all of you at Agresso? if you read this! For everyone else, don't hesitate to apply for a position, right now we (they?) are growing in all sectors.

Needish SA has evolved and is now a somewhat real company. My Chilean buddy and colleague Daniel has made one hell of an effort ? together with Nico, Pato, Pato, Pablo and Alessandra of course ? and in very short time we have become a workplace with an office, some chairs and to my recent understand a server that blew up (slightly exaggerated) 2 days ago. On Wednesday I arrive to Santiago from Europe for the 4th time in my life, and I have probably never felt better about it, at least never more sure about it. Those other times have been filled with questions like;

Will I understand them?

Where should I live?

Who will be my friend?

Will I get killed? (Latin America, in Sweden, means danger)

This time all of those social basic needs are fulfilled on arrival and the big question for this trip is;

For how long will I stay?

To be honest - I really don't know? and I like it!

Sunny winter day at Needish

office-view.JPG

After two cold rainy and windy days, Santiago woke up this morning without any sign of smog. The sun rose up over the city and the Andes turned into an awesome and huge white landscape. Needish office is plenty of sun, and warmer. So, no stove needed. The sun enters through the windows and we’ll enjoy that for a couple of minutes more. After 2pm a huge building in front of us blocks the sun. Anyway, here’s the view we had this morning. Enjoy!

I'm the newest of the Needish team...The journalist Oskar was talking about. I started last Friday; my first work day at Needish.

How did I get here?

A friend of mine forwards me an email 2 weeks ago. Someone was looking for a person to work at a company. And I was looking for a job (I had arrived to Chile in April, after spending 3 months in Argentina and I had already had 3 interviews for different jobs, and didn't like them). The email didn't say too much, and my friend couldn't explain me what the job was about. She didn't know either. But she gave me the "key". "Take a look at the blog", she said (the same blog you're reading now).

But the blog didn't say that much for me in that moment. At least not in terms of what was exactly this Needish thing about. But in some way (don't know which one) –after reading it, I felt identified with that unexplained crazy idea, so I sent an email with my CV and a brief letter explaining why I would like to work here (I must recognize I was really curious about what that Needish thing was about. I couldn't avoid it). After the interview with Dany and Nico last Tuesday, I accepted the job (and more important, they accepted me!). The same day I received emails from Oskar and Johan, telling me I was welcome in the team. So.. I was welcome, happy and Needish!

Continuing with my first work day….I realized about some things:

1. I was working with a great young team. Brilliant nice guys. -I'm lucky.

2. Needish is rising fast. That day, one of the major investors went to the office and he remained impressed with the growth of Needish. (Probably not impressed, but at least surprised)

3. Needish journalist can have a nice first work-day buying chairs!!

Ale.

We hired a journalist! A journalist??

Posted by oskar on June 03, 2007 at 12:57
Extracts from two different chats I have had from the last week? 1) Stockholder You are cost-efficient aren?t you? Me O, yes! 2) Dany I hired a journalist this morning! Me A journalist? Dany A journalist! Me Are you kidding? We never decided that, did we? I don?t understand what she will be doing. Dany Many things. Me Like what? Dany Correct your blogspots. Me Are you fucking kidding? Dany No. You don?t understand how it is. Trust me on this. Me I trust you, but I need to understand what she will be doing. I know companies with hundreds of employees who haven?t had the itching necessity for hiring a journalist. I would prefer to stop the blogging at this moment and focus only on development and fund-raising, which we should. Dany She will be doing other stuff as well. Me Like what? Dany Buying chairs. Me Buying furniture? So we can afford to have someone buying our own furniture? What?s our burn-rate for furniture anyway? Lots of chairs every day? Hire lesser-assed employees, Dany, and it will solve all our problems! J Dany She will be testing the product, helping you with your fucking Business Plan you never finish and do a lot of administration, that way I can spend more time programming. Me Now we are talking! Relieving you from non-programming job, that makes sense. Dany She can do anything man, she is needish, she contacted us. We can?t turn down people who want to work with us. Me We cant? Luckily they?re few then... and about the business plan, I need screen-shots from the system to do that, so what?s the purpose of working the details until that, we haven?t even been taking all the critical decisions for me to even write that shit. Dany The designers are hired and they will deliver in June. Me So basically its other peoples faults if we get delayed? DanyYes. MeGreat, then we can be friends! So she?s a good journalist? Dany She is a great journalist. Now stop writing and let me programme. Me Heavy chairs ey? Will she lift them alone? DanyFuck off. Trust me; I won?t spend our money if not necessary. Me Fuck you to buddy, and shave. Dany Never, my beard is pretty. Needish SA ? employee register(I did not pull this out of our ERP-system) Try to find the pattern-breaker! Oskar Engineer (almost) Johan No higher education (but he has a drivers license) Daniel Engineer (and he actually knows stuff too, not a fake-engineer like I) Nico Engineer (Like Daniel, less hairy) Pato 1 Engineering student (Get out of the University ASAP!) Pato 2 Engineering student (You too! We need our ducks! ) The guy from Uruguay Engineer (name?) Alessandra THE JOURNALIST Its brilliant, can?t you see? Dany, excuse me for doubting you. Alessandra, welcome to the team! You are definitely needed! Now I can misspell this blog, I can offend minorities and you would censor it or I can even write in Swedish and you would translate it! In between my blogs you can carry chairs (watch your back), test the system and do some bank-office queuing for Dany! And (to show all readers that I am not always the conservative and the boring) maybe you could start preparing for the documentary of the founding of Needish. A couple of months ago I wanted to create room in the budget for a documentary of our early days. My idea was to sell it if we fail (it would be great and potentially win an Oscar for best documentary, which by the way is what I always dream of) or use it for marketing-purposes if we succeed. Alessandra, from a PR-perspective, what do you think about it? Which angles would you work? I will bring my DVD-camera when I get there. Look forward to meeting you, now we need to find more girls. Too many boys in the same room tend to? I can?t write that, but it?s not good anyway. We definitely need more people like you. Zoologists, Nurses, Air-stewardesses (can?t afford a corporate jet)? I?m just kidding! Really! Alessandra - Welcome to the team! Oskar
